Dance Company Modern Dance Schedule

Modern Dance

Modern is an expressive art form that came about in the early 20th century as an answer and protest to the strict alignment and turned position utilized in ballet.  Much less step oriented, Modern dance centers more on story telling and often times more pedestrian movement.  Pioneers, including Isadora Duncan, Ruth St. Denis, Ted Shawn and Martha Graham were responsible for the codified technical basis of the dance companies and choreogrpahers we know today, such as Alvin Ailey, Lester Horton and Paul Taylor, and the more contemporary choreographers on the television shows today.

Students registering for Modern & Lyrical Dance must be enrolled in ballet class.
